Which Golf App for Which Job
Scoring apps, trip apps, GPS apps, handicap services — they solve different problems and the reviews rarely say which. An honest sorting, including where we are the wrong answer.
“Best golf app” is an unanswerable question, because four completely different products are filed under it and they’re not competing with each other.
Someone asks the group chat for a recommendation and gets a rangefinder app, a handicap service, a scoring app and a tee-time booker in the same four replies. All four are right answers to questions nobody asked. So here is the sorting, by the job you are actually trying to get done.
Job 1: “How far is it?”
This is a GPS and rangefinder job. Course maps, distances to front-middle-back, shot tracking. If that’s what you need, get one of those — they’re good and they’re cheap.
It is worth knowing that this job doesn’t overlap with the others at all. A distance app isn’t going to run your skins game, and a scoring app that bolts on a rangefinder is usually worse at both. We don’t do it, we’re not going to, and saying so out loud is one of our six promises.
Job 2: “What’s my official index?”
This is a handicap authority job, and it belongs to your national or state association — in the US, a GHIN number through an authorized club. Only they can issue an index that a tournament will accept.
Plenty of apps will compute a handicap-like number for you. That number is useful for making your Saturday game fair and useless for entering a qualifier. Any product that blurs the line is doing you a disservice; we compute net scoring from the numbers you enter and we do not claim to be your governing body.
Job 3: “We’re going away for a weekend”
One trip, one group, everybody has the same phone, and you want to be scoring within a few minutes of deciding. This is a genuine category and there are apps built specifically for it — Dormie is the clearest example, an iPhone app that markets itself on getting a buddies trip from group text to first tee in three minutes.
If that’s the whole job, a trip app is a reasonable answer and it will be faster to set up than we are. The two things worth checking before you commit the group are the two that bite later: whether it costs more once your group is bigger than four or plays more than one round, and whether everyone in the car is on the right platform. We put both of those in a sourced side-by-side comparison rather than asking you to take our word for it — every competitor fact there cites the page it came from and the date we checked it.
Job 4: “We are a group, and we play all year”
A Saturday game, a couple of trips, maybe a member-guest, the same eight to twenty people rotating through. The scoring is the easy part; what you actually need is for the rounds to add up to something — standings that carry over, handicaps built from real rounds, a history that’s still there next season, and a way to run the occasional bigger event without a clipboard.

- You want yardages. We don’t have them and we aren’t adding them.
- You need an official index. Go to your association. We are not it.
- It is genuinely one weekend, once. If there is no season around the trip, most of what we do is overhead. A trip app will be faster.
Everything else — the group, the year, the standings, the money — is the thing we actually built the product around.
